Saturday, April 21: During the Civil War, at least one-fourth of the gunpowder used by the Union soldiers was manufactured at the gunpowder mill located on the Presumpscot River in Gorham and Windham, mills being located on both sides of the River. The Windham Historical Society will present a program about these mills and the part they played in the Civil War and other wars as well as for expansion of the nation. The program begins at 9 a.m. at the Society museum, 234 Windham Center Road. The public is invited. There is no fee, but donations are welcome. At 1 p.m., following a lunch break, a tour of the gunpowder mill site and view of the artifacts still in place will be conducted by the Society and Don Wescott, Presumpscot Regional Land Trust. April 21: Teens are invited to come to the Portland Public Library to take a SAT practice test, 1-3 p.m. The following subjects are available using the library’s own Learn-a-Test program offered through the Learning Express Library: SAT Critical Reading Practice Tests; SAT Math Practice Tests; SAT Writing Multiple-Choice Practice Tests; SAT Writing Practice Essays; and SAT Preparation Courses and Guides. April 21: The North Windham Bull Moose at 771 Roosevelt Trail in Windham will host Portland’s Whitcomb, a local band known for their exciting live performances. They deliver a heavy yet harmonious rock sound with the refreshing vocals of Brant Dadaleares. He, along with guitarists Sean Libby and Andy Beavis, drummer Mark Sayer and bassist Ryan Fleming, will give their first acoustic performance in-store at 3 p.m. Whitcomb will release their new album that day in celebration of Record Store Day. Wednesday, April 25: All area men and women age 50 and over, are invited to celebrate 50+ Adults first anniversary open house at the Gray Town Hall, second floor, in the Henry Pennell Municipal Complex, at 24 Main Street, 9 a.m. to noon. Thursday, April 26: The Lake Region Business Builders is hosting an education and networking event at Rustlers Steak House in Windham from 5-7 p.m. There will be time to network and socialize from 5-5:30 p.m. and then a short overview of Gold Star Referral Clubs followed by Frankee Chapa, a speaker who specializes in educating businesses on how to effectively utilize social media for marketing, branding and customer relations. April 26: The Maine Jazz Band returns to Saint Joseph’s College for a free concert at 7 p.m. in the Viola George Auditorium in Harold Alfond Hall. The band features 16 musicians, including a female vocalist, and plays swing, pop, Latin and blues. The music will include legendary jazz impressions made famous by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Richard Rodgers and Johnny Mercer, Nat King Cole, George Gerswhin, Cole Porter and Chuck Mangione. Saturday, April 28: From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Windham Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to the Windham Public Safety Building at 375 Gray Road. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
April 28: A concert featuring area talent will be held at the Raymond Village Community Church, Route 121, at 7 p.m. to benefit the church’s many activity programs. Entitled “From Broadway to Barber Shop,” the show will feature tenor Norman Whiteside and alto Pamela Dawson from the greater Portland music scene doing Broadway favorites from some of Andrew L. Webber’s hit musicals. The quartet, “The Port City Sound” is the youngest seniors foursome doing barbershop singing chiefly in the greater Portland area. This group has won nine division quartet championships, three Northeast District gold medals, and numerous other awards. Giving the show an intergenerational flavor will be student instrumentalists from Windham High School, each “All State” winners.
