AUGUSTA — The rules of the road will soon be stricter for Maine’s youngest drivers.
Gov. Paul LePage today signed a bill that’s a response to the high number of teen fatalities in Maine during the past four months. The legislation, which was introduced late in this year’s session, is intended to encourage young drivers to avoid distractions that cause accidents.
It increases the minimum fine for texting while driving from $100 to $250, increases fines and terms of license suspensions for violating conditions on a juvenile provisional license, and increases the time repeat offenders lose their provisional licenses for violations.
The new law will take effect 90 days after the close of this legislative session. But supporters say they hope it has an impact as spring prom session starts.
