ORONO – EmJ Fogel singled in two to cap a four-run fourth Wednesday as the University of Maine beat St. Joseph’s 5-0 in softball.
Kelley Ashley allowed three hits in four innings for the win. Beth Spoehr and Kylie Sparks finished it with four strikeouts in three hitless innings for the Black Bears (12-26-1).
Heather Tripp had two hits for St. Joseph’s (30-7).
COLBY SWEEPS SOUTHERN MAINE: Aimee Polimeno struck out nine to lead the Mules (10-19) to a 4-3 win over the Huskies (4-32) in the first game and Megan Michie fanned 14 in a 2-1 game-two victory at Gorham.
BATES, HUSSON SPLIT: Husson (29-10) won the first game 6-5, then Bates (17-10) won game two 6-5 at Lewiston.
Bates sophomore Alayna Garbarino hit a three-run homer in the first inning of game two.
BASEBALL
MASSACHUSETTS 11, MAINE 5: Michael Fransoso was a single short of hitting for the cycle in the University of Maine’s (21-17) loss to the University of Massachusetts (15-14) at Amherst, Mass.
The Minutemen scored three runs in the third and added five more runs in the fifth to take control of the game.
USM 7, BABSON 4: Nick Grady was 3 for 4 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and two RBI to lead the Huskies (17-16) past the Beavers (20-15) at Gorham.
BRANDEIS 14, BOWDOIN 7: Pat Nicholson went 4 for 5 and drove in two runs as Brandeis (8-29) outslugged Bowdoin (18-14) at Waltham, Mass.
Sean O’Hare doubled twice and scored three runs, and Chris Ferro finished with three RBI on a pair of singles.
The Polar Bears got two RBI each from Beau Breton and Kyle LeBlanc.
NORTHERN ESSEX CC 11, SMCC 1: Tim Parker hit two home runs, and Keegan Pafford homered and pitched a complete game to lead the Knights (28-7) past the Seawolves (18-15-1) at Haverhill, Mass.
Alex Brown homered for Southern Maine CC.
MEN’S LACROSSE
COLBY 5, BATES 3: Five players scored for the Mules (9-4, 6-4 NESCAC) as they defeated the Bobcats (4-9, 2-8) at Waterville.
Ian Boldt had a goal, three caused turnovers and two ground balls to lead Colby, which secured the fifth seed in the league championships.
Rob Highland had a pair of goals for Bates.
CURRY COLLEGE 9, UNE 8: John Castellano netted an unassisted goal with 25 seconds left to play to give the Colonels (9-8, 2-5 CCC) a win over the Nor’easters (9-8, 3-4).
NORWICH 9, ST. JOSEPH’S 4: Ian Mendoza and Arron Canarelli scored two goals apiece to lead the fourth-seeded Cadets (9-6) past the fifth-seeded Monks (8-10) in a GNAC quarterfinal at Northfield, Vt.
Jonathan Horgan had three goals for St. Joseph’s.
TUFTS 15, BOWDOIN 7: Cole Bailey scored four goals with three assists as the Jumbos (13-2, 9-1 NESCAC) beat the Polar Bears (11-4, 6-4) at Medford, Mass.
Keegan Mehlhorn had three goals for Bowdoin, which earned the third seed in the league championships.
Chris Williamson made 16 saves for the Polar Bears.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
PLYMOUTH ST. 14, USM 8: Meghan McNabb had two goals and six assists to help the Panthers (12-1, 5-0) beat the Huskies (6-10, 2-3) at Gorham.
Shannon Connerty, McKenna Bay and Caitlin Swanson each had three goals for Plymouth St.
Julia Pearl had three goals for Southern Maine.
BOWDOIN 10, TUFTS 9: Carolyn Gorajek scored her fifth goal of the game with 3:59 left in overtime to lift the Polar Bears (10-5, 6-4 NESCAC) over the Jumbos (9-5, 5-5) at Brunswick.
Gorajek and Katie Stewart scored 16 seconds apart to give Bowdoin a 9-8 lead with 7:41 left in regulation. Gabby Horner pulled Tufts even with 5:22 left.
Chelsea Albright added two goals for the Polar Bears.
COLBY 10, BATES 8: Lindsey McKenna scored three goals, and Tess Petesch had two goals and an assist to help the Mules (13-1, 9-1 NESCAC) overcome a 5-2 deficit against the Bobcats (7-7, 3-7) at Lewiston.
Joan O’Neill had three goals and an assist, and Kathy Yannopoulos had two goals and two assists for Bates.
