Poster contest winners

Secretary of State Charles E. Summers, Jr. announced the winners of the 2012 Maine Constitution Poster Contest.

Kennebunkport Consolidated School fifth-grader Charles Metcalfe won first place for his poster depicting the Floods of 1936 in the “Maine History” division of the contest.

Third-grader Owen Kelley from Hall-Dale Elementary in Hallowell took top honors in the “Maine State Symbols” category.

The contest allows Maine students from kindergarten through grade 12 to participate by submitting posters or essays reflecting Maine symbols or history, the Maine Constitution or voting and democracy.

Winning students and their class are invited to view the state’s original 1820 Constitution at the Maine State Archives in Augusta.

District-wide concert celebration

More than 400 fourth- and fifth-graders from the Sea Road School in Kennebunk, Mildred L. Day Memorial School of Arundel and Kennebunkport Consolidated School performed a district-wide concert April 9 and 10 at Sea Road School.

The concerts featured music from around the world and demonstrated the accomplishments of the young musicians while entertaining their families and friends. 

Directors Sandra Sharood, Victoria Cherry and Tony Michaud were assisted with the production by their colleagues Laurie Ellis and Karen Mathews, from the Middle School of the Kennebunks.  An all Band Night is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kennebunk High School.

Dental hygiene programs for diabetics

Leavitt’s Mill Free Health Center will use a $1,000 grant from Northeast Delta Dental Foundation Inc. to help with the costs associated with oral health screening and dental hygiene programs for its diabetic patients.

Northeast Delta Dental administers dental benefits in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, offering dental insurance programs for organizations of all sizes and individuals and families with no access to employer-sponsored dental benefits.

Volunteers needed for Farm-to-School Project

The Morris Farm and FARMS (Focus on Agriculture in Rural Maine Schools) are seeking volunteers to help sew aprons for child participants of the Farm-to-School Project at AOS 93 schools in Damariscotta, Bristol and Jefferson and at Wiscasset Primary School. Sewers are invited to bring their sewing machines to the Learning Center at Morris Farm, at 156 Gardiner Road,  from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday. Coffee, tea and baked good will be provided.

The Farm-to-School Project teaches children and their teachers about proper nutrition and sustainability.

Garden plots available

The Morris Farm Trust is accepting applications for those who wish rent a garden plot in the Margaret Ellis Community Garden at 156 Gardiner Road.

Garden plots are 20 feet by 10 feet. Rental fee is $25 for the 2012 growing season.
