Ronald Cantor was inaugurated as the third president of Southern Maine Community College during a ceremony Friday morning on the South Portland campus.

The inauguration featured an address by former Sen. George Mitchell and kicked off a campus-wide celebration that included a symposium on jobs, culture and service.

Before becoming president of the college last August, Cantor was associate vice president of Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, N.Y.

During his first year as SMCC president, the school grew to more than 7,500 students and opened a second campus in Brunswick.

The celebration continues today with the President’s 5K Fun Walk/Race at 10 a.m.
