SOUTH PORTLAND — South Portland school officials plan to hold a groundbreaking ceremony today for the high school renovation project.

The public is invited to attend the event, which is set to begin at 5 p.m. near the entrance to the Beal gymnasium.

Mayor Patti Smith, Board of Education Chairman Tappan Fitzgerald, and high school student Gaby Ferrel will speak at the groundbreaking. Students from the city’s five elementary schools and two middle schools have been invited to attend.

In November 2010, voters approved a $41.5 million bond to renovate and expand the high school.
The project, which will resolve code violations as well as updates to the building’s mechanical and security systems, will feature a new Learning Commons, cafeteria and lecture hall.

PC Construction of Portland has been hired to serve as the general contractor. Construction will be done in two phases, with the completion date targeted for December 2014.
