LACONIA, N.H. — The New Hampshire Humane Society says nine dogs are recovering after they were left caged nearly all day for at least four years.

Police say the owner of the Jack Russell terriers is an elderly Plymouth woman who suffers from a medical condition and was unable to care for them. She has not been charged with any crime.

The society tells WMUR-TV (http://bit.ly/LJFTAq) that some of the dogs have extensive medical problems. One of them is a 17 years old and still has a hard time standing up. Another has Lyme disease. Some were not able to be handled at first because they hadn’t had a lot of human contact.

Despite the health problems, the society is hoping people will adopt the dogs. One already found a home Tuesday.
