WINDSOR, Vt. — Police say a man led them on a high-speed chase going the wrong direction on Interstate 89 in Vermont and New Hampshire.

Police say 54-year-old William Verboncouer of Windsor failed to pull over for police in town on Wednesday night and took off, crossing a covered bridge into Cornish, N.H.

The chase continued into Lebanon, N.H., were Verboncouer allegedly got onto Interstate 89 and headed north in the southbound lane. He traveled several miles before heading westbound on U.S. Route 4 through Quechee, Vt., and into Woodstock, where police were able to stop him.

Police said Verboncouer got out of his car and walked toward a state trooper, saying “Shoot me!” He was subdued and taken into custody.

He was charged with negligent operation, attempting to elude, and excessive speed.
