AUGUSTA — A direct descendant of Johnny Appleseed is coming to Maine’s capital city to donate — what else? — an apple tree.

The Small Woodland Association of Maine and the Viles Arboretum in Augusta say John Chapman will attend a special planting ceremony to be held at the arboretum on Tuesday.

Chapman, of Athens, is a direct descendant of the original Johnny Appleseed, whose real name was Jonathan Chapman. The younger Chapman is donating an apple tree as part of his effort to disperse graftings and seeds of trees descended from early 19th century stock.

Johnny Appleseed was born in Leominster, Mass., in 1774. There are many different accounts about his travels. The most common has him walking barefoot along the trails and roads of early America and planting apple trees.
