MILTON, Mass. — A Massachusetts state trooper struck and killed in the line of duty by an allegedly drunken driver has been awarded a posthumous degree from Curry College.

School President Kenneth Quigley on Sunday awarded the degree to the widow of Sgt. Douglas Weddleton, with the couple’s four sons looking on.

The Patriot Ledger reports that Quigley said that Weddleton, a Brockton resident and a 1976 graduate of Brockton High School, was like many other students in the school’s continuing education program, working full-time while studying to earn the college degree they had always dreamed about.

Weddleton died in June 2010 while working a construction detail on Interstate 95 in Mansfield.
