PORTLAND — John Baldacci, Maine’s governor from 2003 to 2011, has joined the Portland law firm Pierce Atwood, the firm announced Tuesday.

He will be a senior adviser, economic development and government relations, and will be based in the firm’s Portland office, but could also work from other offices in New England or Washington, D.C., the firm said.

“We are delighted to have Gov. Baldacci join us at Pierce Atwood,” said Gloria Pinza, the firm’s managing partner, citing Baldacci’s experience at the state and national levels dealing with issues such as energy, health care and economic development.

Baldacci has served on the Bangor City Council, in the Maine Senate and in the U.S. House. He was elected governor in 2002 and re-elected in 2006.

After finishing his second term as governor, Baldacci was named director of the Department of Defense’s Military Health Care Reform Initiative.

Pierce Atwood has more than 130 lawyers and operates seven offices, including in Portland and Augusta.
