PORTLAND (AP) — A 62- year-old Maine man is going to jail for 45 days after pleading guilty to manslaughter for fatally shooting another hunter last fall.
In a plea agreement with prosecutors, William Briggs of Windham pleaded guilty Thursday in Cumberland County Superior Court. He was given a three-year sentence, with all but 45 days suspended, and had his hunting privileges suspended for a minimum of 10 years.
He was also ordered to give 500 hours of community service with a focus on hunter education and training.
Briggs was hunting in Sebago on Nov. 5 when he shot and killed 46-year-old Peter Kolofsky of Sebago.
Briggs told authorities he fired after seeing what he thought were antlers. Kolofsky, who was wearing bright orange, was pronounced dead at the scene.
