FALMOUTH — Falmouth police said the Lambert Street Bridge over the Presumpscot River reopened to traffic tonight.

State engineers closed the bridge, which is on Blackstrap Road, on Monday after raging currents and debris rose up under the bridge making it difficult to see whether its piers had been damaged.

The Maine Department of Transportation predicted the bridge would need to remain closed for two or three days, but police said jersey barriers were removed earlier  and the bridge reopened late this afternoon. The bridge handles about 5,000 vehicles a day.
