WILTON – A Jay man was killed in a car crash late Saturday or early Sunday when his vehicle veered off Route 156 and rolled over, police said.

Paul Caldwell, 23, was found dead at the scene after the Hyundai Elantra crashed sometime before 12:23 a.m. Sunday, Wilton police Chief Heidi Wilcox said in a statement. Speed was partly to blame for the crash, which occurred near Colby Miller Road and the Wilson Lake Country Club, police said.

Caldwell was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car, which is registered to Ambra Gerrish, 38, of Chesterville, police said. Caldwell was the only occupant.

Caldwell had a valid driver’s license, and a blood-alcohol test was conducted, which is standard practice in fatal crashes, Wilcox said.

Wilcox was not available Sunday to provide further details.

Wilton police Officer Timothy Coombs is investigating the crash. He was assisted at the scene by Maine State Police and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
