AUBURN — A Maine family has filed a lawsuit against a man they say rented them a home he didn’t own.

John Stetson and Melissa Rollins say in their suit filed against John Gray in Androscoggin County Superior Court that they found the home in Turner for themselves and their three children on Craigslist.

They paid Gray — who answered the phone number in the ad — more than $4,000 for several months’ rent, security deposit and other fees and moved in in January.

Gray showed the family the four-bedroom house at 64 Bean St. in Turner with a two-car garage during the two weeks following Christmas.

The Sun Journal reports that things went wrong in April when a company working on behalf of a bank showed up to change the locks.

The family found out that the home had been foreclosed on and bank officials say they didn’t know the man who had rented them the home.

The bank said the most recent owners of the house were Clifton and Glenice Fournier. The bank said it didn’t know Gray and that he had never been authorized to rent or manage the property, according to the Journal.
