Hall of Fame induction
The Gorham High School Athletic Hall of Fame will install eight inductees in a ceremony at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 22, in the high school auditorium.
A reception at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria will precede the ceremony. Admission is free.
Those being inducted are Mike Barden, Paul Banks, Kendrick Ballantyne, Lloyd Egers, Cindy Philbrick, Patrick Cianciolo, past athletic director Gerry Durgin and past tennis coach Sonja Frey.
Dean’s list students
Three Gorham students have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Husson University in Maine. They are Yekaterina M. Garnik, Christine Gerry and Andrew Turner.
Benito Murray of Gorham made the dean’s list at Norwich University in Northfield, Vt.
Hawkes in ‘distinguished young women’ finals
Lulama Moyo Hawkes of Gorham will travel to Mobile, Ala., on Sunday, June 17, to participate in the 55th Distinguished Young Women National Finals, June 28, 29 and 30 at the Mobile Civic Center Theater.
Hawkes is one of 50 state representatives competing for a share of around $130,000 in cash scholarships and the opportunity to represent the program as the Distinguished Young Woman of America for 2012.
She is the daughter of Otrude Moyo and Roland Hawkes. She graduated this month from Catherine McAuley High School in Portland.
Following her selection as the Distinguished Young Woman of Maine, Hawkes began preparations for the National Finals competition, which will include five categories of evaluation – scholastics (20 percent), interview (25 percent), fitness (15 percent), talent (25 percent) and self-expression (15 percent). During her two weeks in Mobile, she will complete community service projects, interact with the Gulf Coast community through various events and engage in many hours of rehearsal in preparation for the three-night scholarship competition.
If selected as the program’s overall winner, Hawkes will spend the next year representing Distinguished Young Women across the country through various appearances and promoting the program’s national outreach initiative of “Be Your Best Self.”
Foustoukos
earns degree
Michael Foustoukos of Gorham graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business administration in commencement exercises May 20 at Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass. He is a 2008 graduate of Gorham High School.
Fore-a-Scholarship golf tourney
Gorham Business Exchange is sponsoring its 11th annual “Fore-a-Scholarship” 18-hole golf scramble and barbecue on Friday, June 22, at Gorham Country Club.
Prizes will be awarded for low gross, low net, low net co-ed (team must have two women and two men), longest drive – men, longest drive – women, and closest to the pin.
Jason Beever, Chalmers Insurance Group, is sponsoring a $25,000 prize for a hole-in-one.
Proceeds will provide scholarships to two graduating Gorham High School seniors. One scholarship will be presented to a student pursuing a business degree, and the other scholarship will be presented to a student who has shown an outstanding commitment to community service.
