To the editor:

I want to thank Rep. Kim Olsen of Phippsburg for her recent vote in support of the modest $5 million Land for Maine’s Future (LMF) Bond bill, LD 852.

The Legislature supported the bill by more than the required two-thirds vote and sent it on to the governor’s desk for his signature. He did not sign it, but he did not veto it, so the bond will likely go to voters in November.

LMF funds have protected land in each of Maine’s 16 counties, where families can enjoy hiking, fishing, boating, hunting, snowmobiling, camping, skiing and other outdoor activities.

This program has provided essential infrastructure that helps preserve Maine’s unique character and supports our natural resource-based economy.

With all that LMF has done, it is no wonder why over 60 percent of Maine voters support this program.

LMF-funded projects have had significant positive impacts on the state and our region. For example, LMF dollars recently helped fund the Sprague Pond project in Phippsburg. This tranquil pond is popular with the locals for swimming and is now protected.

Investing in LMF is a smart investment for Maine. A recent Trust for Public Land study found that every $1 invested in land conservation through LMF returned $11 in natural goods and services to the Maine economy.

Thank you, Rep. Olsen, for supporting this important program.
