NEWCASTLE — The driver of a dump truck that was towing an empty trailer is dead following a crash this afternoon on Route 1 in Newcastle.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department identified the victim as 72-year-old Malcolm L. Giles of Edgecomb.

According to police, the 2004 Peterbuilt dump truck was travelling south in the area between Sheepscot Road and Reny’s warehouse when it entered the southbound shoulder.

Giles’ truck continued until it struck a utility pole anchor wire and embankment. The truck came to rest against a grove of trees. Giles was declared dead at the scene.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection was called in after an unknown amount of diesel fuel from the truck spilled on the ground.

A blood alcohol sample was taken by the state Medical Examiner’s Office, but police said there does not appear to be any indication that alcohol was involved.

Traffic continued to flow through the area. Investigators spent five hours at the scene of the crash.
