POLAND — A U.S. Senate Report says children of prisoners are six times more likely than other children to be incarcerated at some point in their lives.
Without effective intervention strategies, as many as 70 percent of those children will get in trouble with the law.
That’s the idea behind a camp in Poland where about 150 Maine fifth- and sixth-graders and more than 60 police and criminal justice professionals will gather from Saturday through Friday.
Camp POSTCARD, short for Police Officers Striving To Create And Reinforce Dreams, was established 19 years ago.
The camp tries to establish positive bonds between the children and criminal justice professionals who serve as camp counselors, are strong role models and teach campers valuable life skills.
