PORTLAND — A proposal before the School Board calls for Deering High School Principal Ira Waltz to be named acting superintendent of schools, effective July 1.

The proposal will be heard by the board Tuesday and, if approved, will place Waltz in the superintendent’s position through Aug. 31 or until a new superintendent begins, according to a School Department press release.

Waltz has been the Deering principal since the summer of 2010 and previously served as assistant superintendent of the Wells-Ogunquit Community School District from 2002-2010. He has also served in administrative positions in the Scarborough School District.

The School Board has been searching for a permanent superintendent to replace James C. Morse Sr. since December. A final decision is expected soon.
