FALMOUTH — A South Portland man faces a felony charge after a June 22 crash that killed a Cumberland woman.

It was the first of two deadly accidents in Falmouth in as many days.

Lt. John Kilbride of the Falmouth Police Department on Wednesday said Matthew Blanchard, 24, was arrested Tuesday in connection with the crash that killed 22-year-old Casey Green. Blanchard was charged with operating after suspension, a felony because it allegedly caused the death of another person.

The accident happened on Gray Road early Friday morning when Green’s 2008 Chevy Cobalt went out of control and struck a tree. Police were initially unable to identify who was driving at the time of the accident.

Green was declared dead at Maine Medical Center on Friday.

Kilbride said Falmouth police worked with the Maine State Police crime lab in Augusta to determine the cause of the crash and that Blanchard was driving the car.

The second accident occurred on Saturday, June 23, at around 9 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. Route 1 and Johnson Road.

Police said a car driven by Ian Philbrick, 17, of North Yarmouth, hit a vehicle driven by Albert Anderson, 67, of Falmouth, after Philbrick allegedly ran a red light.

Anderson’s passenger, Glenice Hutchins, 80, was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where she died from head injuries.

According to Police Lt. John Kilbride, Philbrick was summonsed for running the light, but no other charges have been filed.

“At this point we’re going to put everything together and submit it to the district attorney’s office to go over everything,” he said.
