A dispute over a debt escalated into a violent confrontation at a garage on Mill Street in Raymond this week, police said.

A 51-year-old man from Raymond, whose identity is not being released, was run over by a large sport utility vehicle during the incident, said Capt. Don Goulet of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim, who owns the garage at 75 Mill St., remained hospitalized at Maine Medical Center in Portland on Wednesday with a broken leg and chest injuries.

Richard Valliere, 35, of Windham was arrested after the confrontation and faces a felony charge of reckless conduct with a motor vehicle — a GMC Suburban.

Valliere appeared in Portland Unified Court on Wednesday and was held in the Cumberland County Jail on $1,000 cash bail.

Hubert Libby Jr., 51, of Gorham was charged with misdemeanor assault and was held in the jail on $500 cash bail. Libby also appeared in court Wednesday.

Goulet said Valliere and Libby went to the garage around 10 p.m. Monday to argue about a debt that the owner owed them. The confrontation escalated after Libby punched the garage owner.

A garage worker, who was not charged, armed himself with a splitting maul.

Valliere got into the Suburban and ran over the garage owner, police said.

Valliere and Libby then fled in the Suburban before being pulled over by police in neighboring Windham.
