SACO — A section of Route 1 in Saco had to be shut down this afternoon when a car struck a woman trying to cross the road near Thornton Academy.

Corporal Paul Reynolds said the woman, who is in her 20s, seemed to be okay – she was talking as she was being placed in the ambulance that took her to Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

Her identity and condition were not availble. Reynolds said the woman was struck near a crosswalk but he did not know if she was in the crosswalk when the accident took place.

Reynolds said northbound traffic on Route 1 had to be diverted around the accident scene but southbound traffic continued to flow through the area.

The accident, which took place just before 4 p.m., remains under  investigation.
