Update at 3:20 p.m. —  Matthea Daughtry confirmed that she plans to seek the Democratic nomination for District 66. Daughtry, in a written statement, wrote that she wants to help Democrats "take back the House and make sure that Augusta is serving the needs of the working people of Brunswick and Maine.”

Daughtry graduated from Brunswick High School and Smith College. She has since worked as a freelance photographer, writer, and researcher. She is the former communications associate for Maine’s Majority, an organization formed to represent the 61% of Mainers who did not vote for LePage. While at Maine’s Majority she investigated the LePage administration’s legislative agenda and campaign finances, writing on politics in Augusta and around the state.

The Secretary of State’s Bureau of Elections confirmed today that it has received a withdrawal of candidacy notice from state Rep. Alex Cornell du Houx, D-Brunswick.

The notice makes official Cornell du Houx’s plan to abandon his re-election bid for House District 66. Cornell du Houx announced last week that he was getting out of the race, ending a prolonged controversy that was sparked by an ugly personal dispute between the young lawmaker and state Rep. Erin Herbig, D-Belfast.

Now comes the business of picking another Democratic candidate for the November ballot. Andy Cashman, chairman of the Brunswick Town Democratic Committee, said the town committee will meet July 14 at 3 p.m. at the Curtis Memorial Library to choose a replacement.

Cashman said the District 66 members of the committee will vote to determine the candidate. He said the committee is comprised of 34 members, a third of which are from District 66.

Rumors have been circling about potential replacements, but so far nobody has come forward. Matthea Daughtry, the progressive activist who worked for the group Maine’s Majority, has been the subject of most of the rumblings.

Daughtry has thus far declined to confirm whether or not she is interested in running.

Fred Horch, the Green Independent candidate who lost to Cornell du Houx, D-Brunswick, by 192 votes in 2010, recently confirmed that he’s seeking his party’s nomination to run again in 2012. Republican John Bouchard is also running.
