Just to clarify the statements that John M. Roberts made in his July 3 letter concerning England and its constitution (“Opinions mixed on health care ruling”):

We are “citizens” of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which includes England.

We are “subjects” of Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of Her other Realms and Territories, Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith.

Our “constitution” is based on the Magna Carta, written in 1215, which removed the ability of the monarch to change laws concerning his or her subjects and allowed laws to be made by a citizen-elected parliament. The Magna Carta, in fact, was used to write some parts of the U.S. Constitution.
