PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — A Massachusetts man and his dog are safe after a fisherman and his daughter rescued them from the Piscataqua River between Maine and New Hampshire.

Twenty-seven-year-old Chris Stephens of Haverill was playing fetch with his dog at Peirce Island in Portsmouth on Monday afternoon when Penny swam out too far and was carried away by the current. The 27-pound dog couldn’t swim back to shore.

Stephens jumped in to rescue her but also got caught in the current.

He told the Portsmouth Herald that he tried to get the attention of boats and then started to panic and get tired.

A fishing boat turned around and a man and his daughter pulled Stephens and Penny from the water.

Stephens says without them, he would not have survived.
