PEMBROKE, Maine  — Authorities in Maine say a 44-year-old man has drowned after jumping from a bridge into a popular swimming spot in Pembroke.

The Maine Warden Service said Anthony LeBretton of Pleasant Point had been swimming with family and friends in the Pennamaquan River. He was pulled from the water by family and friends when he did not resurface. They tried unsuccessfully to revive him.

Witnesses said LeBretton landed feet first about 13 feet below the bridge.

Game Warden Joe Gardner tells WNSX-FM he saw the river channel at that spot when it was drained not long ago for repairs to a dam, and there were no physical obstructions in the river then.

Pembroke is a small community in Washington County on the Maine coast.
