Hallie Shiers drove in four runs, and Emily Esposito and Grace McGouldrick combined on a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts as Gorham defeated Franklin County 9-6 to win the Babe Ruth Softball U12 state championship on July 8 at Gorham.

Gorham was undefeated in the state tournament, outscoring its opponents 34-13. The team advances to the New England Regional, starting Friday in Stamford, Conn.

Gray-New Gloucester earned a berth in the Senior League Softball Northeast Regional by winning the state championship for the third year in a row. The team posted wins over Yarmouth, Falmouth, Cape Elizabeth, Portland and Biddeford on its way to the title. Gray-New Gloucester will travel to Worcester, Mass., for the regional tournament, which starts July 27.

Elliott Russell of Freeport was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Scholar-Athlete for the fourth straight year after completing his college career at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Athletes must earn a varsity letter and have at least a 3.5 GPA for the current academic year to qualify.

Bowdoin College will add six new members to its Athletic Hall of Honor on Oct. 20.

This year’s class consists of international track standout Harry Cloudman (1901), legendary basketball coach and player Dick Whitmore (1965), women’s diving trailblazer Ellen Shuman (1976), hockey All-American Alan Quinlan (1977), basketball All-American Greg Fasulo (1978) and football All-American Steve McCabe Jr. (1978).

Hannah Scully, 17, of Saco was named Maine Games Youth Athlete of the Year. Scully, who has been competing in the Maine Games since its inception in 2003, won both individual and team championships with the Saco Jets at the U.S. Twirling Association’s regional championship in Pennsylvania.

Hampton Kew, a Bar Harbor resident formerly from Portland, became one of only two women to ever complete the 20-mile Blackburn Challenge on a stand-up paddleboard Saturday off the coast of Gloucester, Mass.

The Blackburn Challenge is a circumnavigation of Cape Ann and is open to all seaworthy oar- or paddle-powered craft.

Kew finished second overall among women in 5 hours, 42 minutes.

Thor Emory of Lincolnville, also competing on a paddleboard, was third overall in 3:53.

Dylan Richardson of South Portland scored a hole-in-one on the seventh hole at South Portland Municipal Golf Course on July 8. He used a 9-iron for the shot, which was witnessed by Joe Cole.

Scott Wiley aced the 15th hole Saturday at Biddeford-Saco Country Club, using a pitching wedge from 129 yards. Jack Donilon, Tim Pelczar and Gary Roy witnessed the shot.
