BANGOR — Same-sex marriage advocates said today their coalition has grown from 25 groups in January to 77, a sign of strength heading toward the November election.
Mainers United for Marriage gathered 50 supporters outside the Bangor Public Library to tout their success and to call for businesses to join the effort.
“We can feel the energy around our campaign grow every day,” said Matt McTighe, campaign manager. “We have thousands of supporters and volunteers who are hard at work to make sure that all loving, committed couples in Maine can get married.”
McTighe said a recent poll by MaineToday Media that showed 57 percent would vote yes to support gay marriage is a “huge increase” in support. In 2009, Maine voters repealed a same-sex marriage law 53 percent to 47 percent.
