LYNN, Mass. — A man was shot and killed by police after the car he was inside allegedly rammed a police vehicle, authorities said Monday.

Police said they saw Brandon Payne, 23, of Lynn, walking with a gun before getting into a vehicle Sunday night around 9:30 p.m.

A spokeswoman for Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said police tried to stop that vehicle and another that was following it, but the vehicle Payne was riding in rammed an unmarked police sport utility vehicle, causing the SUV to hit a police cruiser. Three Lynn officers and a Massachusetts state trooper opened fire, hitting Payne twice.

Payne was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where a spokeswoman for the Essex County district attorney’s office said he died Monday morning.

Three other suspects, two Lynn men and a New Jersey man, were arrested.

Payne’s relatives told reporters they have not received a full explanation from authorities about what happened.

“We just want justice, the same as everyone wants justice. There should have never been shots fired if nobody else was shooting at them. It’s not fair, it’s not right,” Payne’s cousin, Jessica French, told WBZ-TV.

Blodgett’s spokeswoman said the shooting remains under investigation by prosecutors and state police assigned to Blodgett’s office.
