BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Dustin Martin sent a grounder through the middle with nobody out in the fourth inning of the opening game Friday night.

Martin then ripped a shot over the fence, just inside the right-field foul pole with two outs in the sixth inning of the second game.

Both hits were effective. They provided the winning runs to lift the Binghamton Mets to a 2-1 and 3-1 sweep of the Portland Sea Dogs.

Martin finished the doubleheader 5 for 6 with four of Binghamton’s five RBI.

His three-run shot off reliever Chris Balcom-Miller ruined a fine defensive effort that had helped Mike MacDonald shut the Mets out over the first five innings.

The Sea Dogs turned three double plays and threw out two runners stealing during a four-inning stretch that allowed them to head to the sixth inning with a 1-0 lead and a shot at a split.

“The guys took care of the baseball,” Sea Dogs Manager Kevin Boles said. “MacDonald was able to induce the ground-ball contact and our infield play was real strong.”

Second baseman Marquez Smith was in the middle of a double play and a caught stealing during the fourth inning to keep the Sea Dogs in front. He took the throw from catcher Jayson Hernandez on a double steal and got the ball back to the plate in time to end the inning.

“It was well executed on our part defensively,” Boles said. “Smith coming forward, recognizing that, the guys being vocal on the play; it was a nice redirect by Smith and a nice tag by Hernandez.”

The Sea Dogs weren’t able to erase enough Mets from the bases.

MacDonald left the game after two walks to start the sixth.

Balcom-Miller got the first two outs before Martin’s winning homer.

Martin took his time beginning his home run trot, and Balcom-Miller hit Mets catcher Francisco Pena on the shoulder two pitches later.

Pena and Hernandez had to be separated, and both dugouts were warned.

Martin erased a 1-0 deficit with his homer.

He broke a 1-1 tie with his single in the opener.

Cory Mazzoni and Frank Francisco pitched for the Mets in the first game, before Darin Gorski and Ryan Fraser combined on a four-hitter.

“The pitching was tough tonight,” Boles said. “This is a real good pitching staff that we’re facing right now.”

That staff is strengthened by Mazzoni’s return from the disabled list and Francisco getting work in his injury rehabilitation assignment.

Friday’s start was the first for Mazzoni (4-3) since going on the disabled list with a thumb laceration.

Francisco, who remained with Binghamton after the doubleheader, was making his second appearance while working his way back from a strained left oblique. He has 18 saves in 31 appearances for the New York Mets.

NOTES: When the Sea Dogs were rained out Thursday, they made two roster moves involving catchers.

Hernandez was activated from the disabled list, while Matt Spring was promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Hernandez, 23, played for the first time since June 2. He was 0 for 2 in the second game, dropping to .190 in seven games on the season.

Spring had seven home runs, 18 RBI and a .212 average in 49 games.
