BIDDEFORD — The city council made its final vote, 8-1, to purchase and close the Maine Energy Recovery Company waste to energy incinerator, Tuesday evening.

The vote took place at Biddeford Middle School, with a small audience and no discussion. Councilor Melissa Bednarowski cast the only dissenting vote.

As part of the deal, Biddeford has also signed on for a waste removal contract with Casella Waste, Maine Energy’s parent company, and a curbside recycling program.

See Wednesday’s Journal Tribune for the full story and a look at the celebration that followed.
