NORRIDGEWOCK — The pilot of a plane that crashed after landing at a Norridgewock airport Tuesday escaped injury, but there was some damage to the aircraft.

David Atwood, 60, of Old Town, landed his Aeronca Champ airplane at the Central Maine Regional Airport about 11 a.m. when “for some reason, the pilot lost control,” said Lt. Carl Gottardi of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

The plane crashed into several trees at the edge of the airport about 100 yards away from the runway, damaging the wings and tail, Gottardi said. There were no passengers onboard, he said.

The Federal Aviation Authority is conducting an investigation.
