MONCTON, New Brunswick — Angry Canadian lobstermen who lashed out last week against cheap lobster imports from Maine are heading back to the water to set their own traps.
The two-month lobster season starts today for lobstermen off southeastern New Brunswick. Many of those same lobstermen protested outside several processing plants over imports of lobster from Maine, which ships more than half of its harvest to Canada.
The situation has simmered since a Canadian judge issued an order preventing fishermen from blocking lobstermen shipments at processing plants for 10 days.
Maine Marine Resources Commissioner Patrick Keliher says there continues to be an oversupply of lobster, the source of the problems for lobstermen this summer.
