FALMOUTH — The University of Maine Cooperative Extension in Cumberland County hosted its fourth annual Backyard Locavore Day in Falmouth and surrounding communities on Aug. 11.
Locavore Day is designed to educate the public about do-it-yourself strategies for becoming a locavore, who is someone who eats food produced locally. Every year more and more people grow, harvest and preserve foods in sustainable ways to meet their food needs, according to the Cooperative Extension.
The day included demonstrations and talks on gardening methods, including vegetable and square-foot gardening; food-preservation methods, such as drying and hot-water bath canning; backyard composting; root cellars; beekeeping and other topics.
The event raised funds to build the Cooperative Extension’s Cumberland County Demonstration Garden at Tidewater Farm in Falmouth.
