AUGUSTA — The Maine Labor Department says the state’s unemployment rate was 7.6 percent last month, unchanged from the year before and up a tenth-of-a-percent from June.

Commissioner Robert Winglass said Friday that the number of unemployed was estimated at 53,800, up 400 over the year.

Overall, Maine’s jobless rate is better than the U.S. estimate of 8.3 percent.

In New England, the average unemployment rate was 7.1 percent. Rates were 5.4 percent in New Hampshire, 5 percent in Vermont, 6.1 percent in Massachusetts, 10.8 percent in Rhode Island and 8.5 percent in Connecticut.

Among metro areas, the unemployment rate was below the Maine average at 6.1 percent in Portland-South Portland-Biddeford and higher than the state average with 8.2 percent in Bangor and 7.9 percent in Lewiston-Auburn.
