WOOLWICH — Robert David Stevens, 95, of Murphys corner Road, Woolwich, died on August 14, 2012 at the Hillhouse where he was a resident for the past year. He was born in Bath, December 4, 1916, the son of Hiram T. and Harriet (McDonnell) Stevens. He graduated from Morse High School class of 1935, he was the class treasurer. Robert joined the United States Army and proudly served his country in the South Pacific during WWII. Robert returned to the states, and on a G.I. Bill he attended New England Institute of Anatomy and Embalming School, class of 1950.

On October 4, 1952 he married his best friend Roberta Hathorne and the couple resided in Woolwich to raise their family.

Bob ran his own building and contracting business and with his wife Roberta, owned & operated Sea Acres Cottages at Popham Beach for 46 years.

Bob was a life member of the Bath Lodge of Elks, the VFW and the American Legion. He was also a member of the Phippsburg Congregational Church; he served for many years as a trustee of the Popham Chapel and was a long-time member of the Popham Beach Improvement Association.

Bob loved baseball and over the years followed the Boston Braves, the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Mets. He enjoyed jazz music and reading about the civil war. He also had a passion for golf, playing during his retirement years, way into his 80’s at the Sebasco Golf Course, where he scored a “hole in one” 3 times. Bob was always happiest when he was at his summer home at Popham. He will be sadly missed.

He is predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Roberta, his sisters Carol Burke and Jane Stevens, and brother Hiram C. Stevens.

He is survived by his daughter Rebecca Wellman and her husband Peter of Bennington, VT; grandchildren, Abigail S. Sturgeon and her husband Mark of S. Burlington VT, Robert P. Wellman and his wife Danielle of Hinesburg, VT. and Hannah W. Wellman of Somerville, MA; great grandson Sawyer Stevens Wellman; sister, Ellen Staley of Bath, and nieces, Nancy Lebel, Suzanne Norton, Sally Boucher, and Jane Burke.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 25, 2012 at 11:00am at the Popham Chapel.
