PORTLAND — Marquez Smith gave the Sea Dogs the lead for good with a three-run homer in the fifth inning as Portland topped the New Britain Rock Cats 7-4 Sunday afternoon before 6,062 at Hadlock Field.

Xander Bogaerts, 19, contributed with two doubles, a run and two RBI.

The Sea Dogs ended their homestand 5-1 as they improved to 60-66. New Britain dropped to 68-59.

Brandon Workman (2-0) made his second start for Portland since his promotion from Class A Salem. He allowed two runs on six hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out two.

Peter Hissey singled in Bogaerts for a 1-0 Portland lead in the second inning.

New Britain scored twice on a sacrifice fly and a Rene Tosoni home run.

The Sea Dogs rallied in the fifth. Derrik Gibson walked and Ryan Dent singled. Jackie Bradley Jr. doubled in Gibson to tie the game.

Smith, who was signed out of the independent leagues in June, hit a fastball from Logan Darnell (9-11) the opposite way, over the right-field wal for his sixth home run, giving Portland a 5-2 lead.

Sea Dogs reliever Chris Martin allowed two runs over 2 2/3 innings as New Britain closed to 5-4.

Bogaerts gave Portland insurance runs with a two-run double in the eighth.

Closer Brock Huntzinger got the final four outs for his sixth save.

The Sea Dogs play the Rocks Cats again at 7 Monday night in New Britain, Conn.
