CHRIS WEGNER, a Brunswick native, battles with an approximately 9-foot blue shark he’s got on the line just after noon on Thursday, aboard the Atlantic Adventurer. The shark can be seen just below the surface. The Atlantic Adventurer was one of about 60 boats on the board of the 14th annual Muscular Dystrophy Association Sportfishing Open out of South Portland, which took place Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Wegner, who now lives in upstate New York, where he works as a prison guard, came back to Maine with friend and coworker Adam Steck to fish off the Adventurer for the tournament. Below, his effort pays off. The shark didn’t qualify for a prize in the MDA Sportfishing Open because blues weren’t being counted in the shark category. But Wegner said the catch is a “dream come true” nonetheless.
