SOUTH PORTLAND — A standoff in the Redbank section of the city was resolved peacefully early Tuesday afternoon when a 54-year-old man was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland for psychiatric evaluation.

South Portland Police Lt. Frank Clark said police were called to a residence on MacArthur Circle West at 9:46 a.m. after a report the unidentified man had threatened to shoot himself.

Because police were unable to establish contact with the man, Clark said Scarborough Police officers and members of regional tactical and negotiating teams were called to the scene. Clark said nearby properties were evacuated.

Eventually, police learned the man was alone in the residence and reached him by phone. He was convinced to surrender without incident around 12:30 p.m., and no firearms were found inside his home.

Neighbors were allowed to return to their homes by about 1 p.m., Clark said.
