DAMARISCOTTA — The town of Damariscotta is moving closer to having the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department provide full-time police coverage for its community.

Police Chief Chad Andrews said the Board of Selectmen has scheduled two public hearings on Sept. 19 and Sept. 26 before the proposal to eliminate the town’s police department is presented to voters during the Nov. 6 election.

County Sheriff Todd Brackett said his department has offered to provide “24-7 coverage” that could involve hiring all of Damariscotta’s five officers, including Chief Andrews. The county already provides emergency dispatch services for Damariscotta.

Andrews said the county proposal would save the town about $70,000 but some of the services that are currently provided by local police – such as well-being checks on the elderly and infirm – would be lost in such a move.
