BANGOR — A prosecutor in Maine says a Nebraska man has been charged with two counts of gross sexual assault for acts that allegedly happened 22 years ago.
Penobscot County District Attorney Christopher Almy says a grand jury returned the indictment Wednesday against 63-year-old Clarence Cote of Nemaha, Neb.
Almy tells the Bangor Daily News that the victim, now 30, was 8 when the alleged abuse occurred in the Lincoln area. He says she still wants her abuser to be charged.
Almy says Cote left the state when he learned he was being investigated, and he couldn’t be reached immediately for comment. It’s unclear if he’s being represented by a lawyer. If convicted, Cote faces up to 30 years in prison.
The fact that Cote fled the state exempts the alleged crime from Maine’s six-year statute of limitation, according to the BDN.
The girl reported the assault in 1994 when she was 12.
