CAPE ELIZABETH — Defending Class B state champion Falmouth opened the high school girls soccer season with a 2-1 win against Cape Elizabeth Friday afternoon.

Caitlin Bucksbaum, Maine’s Gatorade Player of the Year last season, scored goals in the first half to stake the Yachtsmen to an early 2-0 lead.

Buckbaum lifted in a shot from two yards inside the left post over goalie Mary Perkins’ head to open the scoring 27 minutes into the match. With less than five minutes left in the opening half, she put in a right-footed shot from 15 yards out front after receiving freshman Tyler Spence’s centering pass from the right end line.

Talley Perkins chipped in a shot from 10 yards out for Cape 11 minutes into the second half.
