READFIELD – Lightning delayed the start of Maranacook’s football season for 45 minutes Friday night.

But once the weather cleared and the rain subsided, the Black Bears went to work. They scored six first-half touchdowns en route to a 42-0 victory against Old Orchard Beach at the Ricky Gibson Field of Dreams.

Andrew Lachance caught a pair of touchdown passes from Caleb Castonguay, both on fourth down, and Jesse Evans scored twice, including a 75-yard interception return. Castonguay and Jake Gibson also scored for the Black Bears.

The Seagulls were completely overwhelmed on both sides of the ball. They committed 10 turnovers, five of those interceptions by quarterback Matt Parks. To compound matters, they lost their best player, Bryan Roberts, when he collided helmet to helmet on the opening play of the second half.

Castonguay completed just two passes in nine attempts but both were clutch throws. After Lachance recovered a fumble at the Old Orchard 15, a penalty and sack found Maranacook facing a fourth-and-goal at the 21. With the formation spread wide, Castonguay found Lachance, the tight end, over the middle for the score. Castonguay added an 11-yard rush for a touchdown in the first quarter and passed to Zach Bessette for the conversion.

The Black Bears ran the ball effectively in the first half behind Evans (seven carries, 28 yards) and fullback Simon Davis (7-77). Evans scored back-to-back TDs in the second quarter, the first a 2-yard run that capped an 84-yard drive highlighted by a 32-yard counter from A.J. Stephens.

On the second, Evans read Parks’ pass to the right flat perfectly, intercepted it and ran 75 yards down the sideline. Castonguay capped the first half when he hit Lachance just inside the right front pylon for a score from 10 yards on fourth down. He rushed the conversion to make it 36-0 at the break.

Maranacook Coach Joe Emery went to his bench early in the second half.

Jake Gibson, who rushed for 82 yards in a reserve role, scored on a 15-yard run to compete the scoring.

Davis, Lachance, Besstte, Adam Betts and Richie Antanavich led a Black Bear defense that limited the Seagulls to seven first downs and 87 yards.
