GORHAM – Michaela George scored two goals as the University of Southern Maine opened its field hockey season with a 4-2 win over Wheaton.

Ariel Kaplan added a goal and an assist, and Peyton Dostie scored the other goal.

The Huskies led 3-0 at halftime, and George made it 4-0 early in the second half.

ST. JOSEPH’S 3, EASTERN CONNECTICUT 0: Rachelle Messuri opened the scoring 23:56 into the game and added a second goal with 16:08 left to lead the Monks past the Warriors in a season opener at Mansfield, Conn.

Brenna Fitzgibbon also scored, four minutes into the second half.

CENTRAL MICHIGAN 1, MAINE 0: Erin Dye scored off a penalty corner in the 27th minute to lift the Chippewas (3-1) over the Black Bears (1-3) at Ann Arbor, Mich.

FOOTBALL

HARTWICK 55, HUSSON 14: Mike Mathews threw for 159 yards and three touchdowns in the first half as the Hawks took a 44-0 lead in an opener at Bangor.

Ben Foss had three catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns for Husson.

UMASS-DARTMOUTH 1, ST. JOSEPH’S 0: Jordan Sindo scored 6:46 into overtime as the Corsairs (2-0) edged the Monks (1-1) at the USM Men’s Soccer Classic in Gorham.

COAST GUARD 3, SOUTHERN MAINE 0: Greg Kenner-ley opened the scoring in the 11th minute and Walter Heaney added a pair of goals to lead the Bears (1-1) over the Huskies (0-2) at Gorham.
