STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The new era at Penn State is off to a disappointing start.

The Nittany Lions let an 11-point halftime lead slip away, and Ohio quarterback Tyler Tettleton accounted for three second-half touchdowns to hand Bill O’Brien a 24-14 loss in his debut as Penn State head coach.

For many fans, just having football again at Beaver Stadium was enough of a victory following a trying offseason that included the death of former beloved coach Joe Paterno, and crippling NCAA sanctions placed on the football program for the Jerry Sandusky child abuse scandal.

NORTHWESTERN 42, SYRACUSE 41: Backup quarterback Trevor Siemian hit Demetrius Fields for a 9-yard touchdown pass with 44 seconds left to give the Wildcats a win at Syracuse, N.Y.

Siemian, subbing for starter Kain Colter, drove the Wildcats 75 yards in 10 plays, taking advantage of a personal foul against Syracuse defender Keon Lyn for a hit out of bounds on the previous play.

The decisive score in the sweltering Carrier Dome came after Ryan Nassib had engineered a stunning comeback for the Orange, throwing for four second-half touchdowns. Nassib finished 44 of 65 for 470 yards.

MIAMI, FLA. 41, BOSTON COLLEGE 32: Freshman Duke Johnson broke two long touchdown runs, rushing for 135 yards to lead the Hurricanes to a win at Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Chase Rettig completed 32 of 51 passes for 441 yards and two touchdowns for BC, which led 14-0 after its first two possessions.

MARYLAND 7, WILLIAM & MARY 6: Justus Pickett ran for a 6-yard touchdown with 9:52 remaining, and Brad Craddock added the extra point to give the Terrapins a win at College Park, Md..

VIRGINIA 43, RICHMOND 19: Michael Rocco threw for 311 yards and a touchdown as the Cavaliers rolled to a win at Charlottesville, Va.
