SCARBOROUGH — A man was arrested after he allegedly tried to run over at state trooper on the Maine Turnpike Saturday afternoon, the Department of Public Safety said.
Trooper Kyle Wells attempted to stop a car on the turnpike for an expired registration, but the car sped off, spokesman Steve McCausland said.

The car eventually went off the road near exit 42 in Scarborough, McCausland said, and after Wells stopped and got out of his patrol car, the car, driven by Matthew Cole, 23, began to back up toward him.
Wells fired at the car, but Cole wasn’t hit. Cole surrendered after the shots were fired, McCausland said, and no one was injured in the incident.
Cole, who is being held at the Cumberland County Jail, was charged with eluding a police officer and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon.
McCausland said state police aren’t sure where Cole is from. He gave his address as the Cumberland County Jail.
Wells has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated, and the Maine Attorney General’s office will investigate the shooting. Both steps are standard procedure, McCausland said.
