FRYEBURG – Forgive the York High football players for being a little sluggish when they arrived Saturday morning for their Western Class B game at Fryeburg Academy. A two-hour, 70-mile ride on a school bus can numb the mind a bit.

 “Mentally it’s tough,” said York Coach Randy Small. “I always tell the kids, we’re down 14 points before we even get off the bus.”

If that’s the case, the Wildcats started their rally right away, scoring on their clock-chewing opening drive and never looking back in an impressive 34-0 win Saturday afternoon.

Ross Hogan completed 7 of 14 passes for 138 yards and three touchdowns, including a blitz-beating 7-yard strike to Dan Bock on the opening drive. York (2-1) held the ball for 8 minutes, 23 seconds on that first possession, which covered 43 yards on 12 plays. Ben Lawlor’s point-after kick gave the Wildcats a 7-0 lead before they wiped the sleep from their eyes.

“One way to beat a good offense is to have another good offense keep the ball away from it,” Small said. “I thought we were consistent doing that.

“The kids played well and overall we’re very happy.”

It was a York offense lacking its top running back, Thomas Kinton, who rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns in a 20-7 win at Cape Elizabeth a week ago but missed this game because of an injury.

“TK is our leader and we’re not the same without him,” Hogan said. “But it just shows no one is irreplaceable.

“We managed to pull out a win without him, and that’s all that matters.”

Sean Kelly took on the bulk of the load, rushing 24 times for 95 yards and a touchdown. Fullback Ryan Miller ran 10 times for 46 yards and a touchdown.

“We definitely started a little slow, the ride, the day game threw us,” said York center Pat Walsh. “We just went back to our game and played smash-mouth football, pounding the ball.”

Walsh, along with guard Taylor Newton, tackle Ethan McDonough and tight end Lee Mitchell on his right, and guard Alexander Mercutio and tackle Kyle Miller to his left, punished the Raiders’ front seven relentlessly.

“They kind of hit us in the mouth, and we didn’t have a whole lot of hit back,” said Fryeburg Coach David Turner. “The game was won up front. They were the more aggressive team today, and we weren’t really able to get anything going.”

Fryeburg quarterback Andrew Rascoe completed 5 of 10 passes for 39 yards. Running back Devine Dockery gained 57 yards on eight carries for the Raiders (2-1), who were hampered by turnovers, losing five of their six fumbles.

Kelly made it 13-0 on a 4-yard run with 42 seconds left in the first quarter. The play was set up when a high snap sailed over the head of Fryeburg punter C.J. Bartlett, who covered the ball at the Fryeburg 29. Hogan hit Wesley Warner for 20 yards along the left sideline, a penalty moved the ball to the 4, and Kelly pounded it in from there.

Hogan hit Warner for a 21-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to make it 20-0 at the half.  Miller’s 2-yard run pushed the lead to 27-0 after three quarters, and Bock capped the scoring with a long run after a dump pass for a 37-yard touchdown two minutes into the fourth quarter.
