Greg Viola has provided the Scarborough football team with a real shot in the arm with his pass catching and kicking.

Though he’s a senior, this is Viola’s first varsity senior.

A former soccer player, Viola was convinced to go out for the team by his older brother, Joe, who played for Coach Lance Johnson in Johnson’s first year as coach two seasons ago.

“Greg played on the JV team last year,” said Johnson. “He had never been tackled before so he wanted to see what it was like.”

So far this season, Viola isn’t being tackled often. Against Windham on Friday night, he scored the first two touchdowns on receptions from quarterback Dillon Russo.

Three plays into the game, Viola got behind the secondary for a Russo pass. He then eluded pursuing defenders, weaving his way to the end zone for a 65-yard touchdown.

His next touchdown was a spectacular catch in the corner of the end zone. Viola, a senior, made a fully extended diving grab for a 30-yard touchdown.

Viola is one of the fastest players on the team.

“He’s fast, fast,” said Johnson.

Viola also is strong on extra points if the Red Storm (3-0) can get the snap down. That was the only problem the Red Storm had in beating Windham, 27-12.

WHEN BONNY EAGLE punted for the first time Friday against Thornton Academy, the ball sailed right into the hands of Golden Trojans returner Andrew Libby. That was not the Scots’ plan.

“We were trying to kick it away from Libby,” Bonny Eagle Coach Kevin Cooper said. “We know how good he is. We ended up kicking it to him. We didn’t do a good job on coverage. And he did what he does.”

What Libby did was field the punt, break right and race up the sidelines for 64 yards and a touchdown. The score tied the game 7-7, in a game Thornton eventually won, 37-20.

It was Libby’s third punt return for a touchdown in three games, following a 59-yard effort against Deering and a 64-yard score vs. Gorham.

Libby not only excels at the job, he loves it.

“Punt returning is just awesome,” he said. “When you catch the ball and have people coming for you, it’s a thrill.

“But the best thing is when you’re running on the outside and you see a whole line of your guys blocking for you. You have a whole lane open for you. Everyone is playing for one another.”

Thornton’s Josh Coffin has experienced a similar sensation on kickoff returns. After returning one for 83 yards and a touchdown against Gorham last week, he returned a kickoff 80 yards against Bonny Eagle, which set up a touchdown.

CHEVERUS STRIKER Abby Maker is expected to miss at least one game after suffering a bone bruise Friday during the Stags’ 3-1 loss to unbeaten Scarborough in a Western Class A soccer game.

Maker scored 15 goals in her first four games and leads the Southwestern Maine Activities Association in goals. She was helped off the field with about seven minutes left because of an injury to her right leg.

“Hopefully, she won’t be out for long,” Cheverus Coach Dan LaVallee said.

Maker will miss Tuesday’s game at unbeaten Windham (5-0). The Stags are at Kennebunk (0-3-1) on Thursday and host Sanford (5-0) on Saturday.
