BRUNSWICK — The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference and Western Maine Conference State Qualifiers were held on Tuesday, the Mountain Valley Conference State Qualifier is set for today and Wiscasset High School participated in the MVC Championships Friday and Monday.
The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference high school golf qualifier was held at Natanis Golf Club’s Arrowhead Course on Tuesday.
Behind Brad Smith’s 2-over par 74, the day’s individual low round, Brunswick finished in a tie for third with a round of 326.
Bangor took the KVAC title, shooting a team total of 321, with Cony four strokes back at 325. The Dragons and Messalonskee tied for third, with Edward Little and KVAC South champ Oxford Hills even for fifth at 328.
All six teams qualified for the team competition in the Class A state tournament, which will be held on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. on the Arrowhead Course. Falmouth is the defending Class A state champ.
“I’m pleased at the way things played out, and I truly felt we had a shot coming in,” said Brunswick coach Mal Strange. “Brad having the low round of the day was great, with the top 16 golfers (81 and better) advancing to the individual championship on October 13.”
Smith will be the lone Brunswick golfer in the individual tournament.
Derek Devereaux (83) missed the individual qualification by two strokes, with teammates Cam Heatley (84), Ben Lord (85), John Parker (88) and Tommy Favreau (111) also competing for Brunswick.
Mt. Ararat’s Tyler O’Connor also qualified for the states with a 79. Other Eagle golfers included T.J. Ackerman (90), Eric Farnsworth (99), Jeremy Williams (100), Ben Foley (111) and Nick Dow (107).
Morse golfers included Jordan Lister (114), Alex Paulus (121), Wesley McKenna (102) and Ethan Brewer (99).
Wiscasset in third
Wiscasset was seeded fourth going into the singleelimination MVC Tournament and the Wolverines opened with a 7-0 win over Mountain Valley on Friday.
On Monday, Wiscasset lost to eventual conference champion St. Dom’s 6.5-.5 at the Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro.
In singles play, Wiscasset’s Chandler Longfellow (47) lost to Zach DeBlois (41), 4 and 3; Cody Graves (45) fell to Mike Richards (45), 2 and 1; Darin Wood (47) fell to John Marcoux (45)0, 3 and 2; Tommy Anderson (44) and Andrew Marcoux (47) halved; and Matt Craig (51) lost to Mitchell Lorenz, 3 and 1.
Team scores were Wiscasset 183, St. Dom’s 174.
The Wolverines also played for third place in the afternoon, beating Madison, 5-2.
Longfellow (50) beat Jared Miller (47), 4 and 3; Graves (546) got past Ty Cone (57), 4 and 3; Wood (38) bested Levi Richards (46), 5 and 3; Anderson (50) lost to Tripp Libby (NS), 4 and 3; and Craig (55) beat KP Campbell (53), 1-up.
Wiscasset (16-6) shot a 174 to the Bulldogs’ 188.
In the championship match, St. Dom’s got past Winthrop, 6.5-.5.
Freeport qualifies
Freeport competed in the WMC Qualifier at Willowdale with 12 individuals, four Class B teams, and one Class C squad going to states.
In Class B, Yarmouth (319), York (322), Cape Elizabeth (335) and Freeport (356) got in, while North Yarmouth Academy (363) was the lone Class C team to qualify.
Adam Falk of Lake Region led the individuals with a 73, while Freeport’s Nick Cartmell (82) placed 11th.
Other Freeport golfers included Nick Tardiff (84), Jonathan Mervine (93), Quinn Dowling (97), Spencer Drake (99) and Clayton Morrison (114).
